About Second Grade:
Second grade is an
exciting year where students reinforce, master and build upon the
knowledge and skills they acquired in first grade.
With
the Saxon Math Program, we master addition and subtraction facts 0-18,
multiplication facts 0-5 and even begin division. We work on mixed
fractions, telling time to the minute, and word problem solving. We
use manipulative in our daily lessons which include out math meeting
board, tiles, geometric shapes, flash cards, wrap-ups, money, clocks, base
ten blocks, thermometers and more.
Language
Arts skills continue to develop our writing skills and learning many of
the parts of speech. We use the writing process to write a variety
of sentences, paragraphs, stories, friendly letters, book reports, and a
variety of forms of poetry. The Spelling curriculum follows phonic
based weekly lessons. Reading skills are assessed early in the year
to provide each child with appropriate level of materials and challenges.
During
Science lessons students participate in a variety of activities and
experiments. The many units of study include animals, weather,
measurement, our environment, sound, matter and force, changes on
earth, solar system, growth and changes in people and plants.
The
Social Studies curriculum is focused on learning about communities.
Children learn about what makes neighborhoods and communities of different
sizes, how people celebrate community special events, the earning and
spending, making rules and laws, communities of the past and communities
around the world. Maps, globes, charts and graphs are utilized
throughout the Social Studies units.
