Introduction

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to suddenly move to a completely different country during a time of hate and conflict? In the book Habibi, by Naomi Shihab Nye, Liyana, an American born Arab, spent her life in the freedom of America. One year her family moved to Palestine, where her life changed. Palestine is in the middle of the Arab-Israeli Conflict. You will learn what life would be like in her position.

The Task

Pretend that you are Liyana (girl) or Omer (boy). Write a journal about your life during the Arab-Israeli Conflict. How does it affect your life personally and your life style? Also, write about what was going on during the war.

The Process

First, pick one of the following wars as a setting.

War of Independence - 1948

Sinai War - 1956

Six Day War - 1967

Yom Kippur War - 1973

Research your chosen war so that you have a background of what the war was about. Links that might help you are listed under Resources.

Next, start writing a journal entry that begins on a Monday. Write an entry every night for one week. Your last entry should be written the following Sunday. The journal entries should be at least four paragraphs long, making a total of 28 paragraphs.

.

While writing your journal really try to place yourself in Liyana  or Omer's position. It would be helpful to read the book Habibi. Write about what you would feel, see, do, and how your life would be different during the war, which would include food, clothing, friends, family, and basic lifestyles and chores.

Evaluation

Grades will be decided on the performance of each student's work and whether all the requirements are met. A score of a 4 is an A, a 3 is a B, a 2 is a C, and a 1 is a D. If the student fails to do any of the assignment it is a 0 score, or an F.
