BSS offers Middle School Students electives weekly. Students will select one course for each trimester.
2016-2017 Middle School Electives
Create and command robots that do what you want! Unleash the creative powers of the new LEGO MINDSTORSMS EV3 set to create and command robots that walk, talk, think and do anything you can imagine. We will begin by following the easy, step-by-step 3D building instructions to build one of the 5 cool robot characters and command them with your smart device or remote controls. If you can think it, we can build it!
In this elective students will be working on projects throughout the year to make our school and school grounds beautiful. They will be doing curb appeal projects, like raking and grounds clean up. Students will also be working with the Meals on Wheels Program as volunteers! All are welcome to brainstorm any other activities that will “give back” to their school and community.
Sci-Fi Book Club
What happened to dinosaurs? How big is the universe? Why are oceans salty? Is a meteor going to hit us? Join Mrs. Sebastian as she takes you on an exciting journey through the wonderful world of science - past, present and future! From shipwrecks on the bottom of the ocean to alien life on Mars, this elective is perfect for any student who loves books, science, lively discussions and exploring your imagination!
Little Knight Study Buddies
Calling all future teachers!! Do you like to work with young kids? Or do you just enjoy helping out our Little Knights in Pre-School and Kindergarten? Work with Mrs. Glenn in Preschool or Mrs. Avery in Kindergarten with activities such as centers in art, reading, math, etc.
Elementary STREAM Partners
Middle school students will help first and second graders with their exciting STREAM projects. They will work with individual students or with small groups to help Mrs. Allred and Ms. Bilson igKNIGHT the passion for STREAM in our younger students!
What is a Raspberry Pi?
A Raspberry Pi is a low cost credit-card sized computer that plugs into a computer monitor or TV and uses a keyboard and mouse. It is a capable little device that helps kids explore computing and computer programming languages. It can do everything you expect a regular computer to do! In this elective learn how you can use a Raspberry Pi for all sorts of brilliant and useful things, from learning to program, to making robots to taking pictures from the stratosphere!
Yearbook Design & Publication
The BSS Yearbook elective is an excellent opportunity for students to work together to capture the memories and events of the school year and provide their peers with a lasting memento that will bring cherished memories to life for years to come. In the meetings, students work together to take and organize pictures, write captions and learn the many processes that are required to publish the annual Blessed Sacrament School yearbook. It is a unique opportunity for students to practice teamwork and acquire the skills necessary to successfully produce a comprehensive publication. And it's a lot of fun.
If getting grass stains on your shorts and a couple bruises on your elbows doesn’t sound like a good time…. then Ultimate Frisbee might not be for you! Prepare to go all-out in a 9 week class where diving out for a catch becomes second nature! You will learn an advanced approach to the sport of Ultimate Frisbee and will get a chance along with 6 of your teammates to compete for the BSS Ultimate CUP! The culminating event will be a round robin tournament where the two best teams will compete for the championship!
Knights on Wall Street
Students will have the opportunity to make real trades and investments in the US stock market and learn the basic principles of opening and maintaining a portfolio. Students will also learn about major market milestones and how practices have changed throughout the course of Wall Street. This class will give students real life information that that can continue to grow even after the elective is over!
Coach Egg's Finer Points of Fantasy Football
This elective will be purely enjoyable while giving the students a platform to create their league and fantasy teams. You will learn the ins and outs of trade deadlines, probabilities based on statistics, and an overall better understanding and love for the sport of American Football. Bragging rights and math skills will surely be tested in this course but most importantly, which student will win the league and take home the coveted "Golden Egg" trophy?!?
Library Take-Over Make-Over
Explore the BSS Library with Mrs. Parker! This elective will help keep our library up and running, current and up to date. Design a system to keep our library books organized and shelved for the students at BSS. Research what books we have and create a database of books that you would like to see BSS add to our library. The front display windows and bulletin boards are yours to decorate, display student work and unique ideas for you! Let’s dig in and make our library shine! The possibilities are endless!
Knights Makers Guild
Are you a MAKER at heart? Do you like to tinker, create, craft and build? This elective is for you! Bring your favorite emoji to life, be your own Picasso and create your own masterpiece, visit STEAM Junction (Burlington’s own Maker Space) and much more! Join Mrs. Ehmig in this elective and get your creative MAKER groove on!
Ever wonder if double dipping really spreads germs? Does toast really always land butter-side down? Can you make a glow stick out of Mountain Dew, vinegar, and baking soda as claimed on the internet? Separating truth from fiction can be tough! In this elective Mrs. Ehmig and Mrs. Sebastian will endeavor to find the truth as we investigate claims using research and the scientific method. We will also watch episodes of MythBusters as an inspiration and to analyze and critique the investigative methods demonstrated on the show.
